KEARNY, NJ (CBSNew York) – There was chaos inside a Walmart in Kearny, New Jersey, when a man was stabbed with a machete in an argument on Friday, police said.
Police arrived at the store on Harrison Avenue around 10:30 a.m. after someone called 911 to report an assault, CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis reported.

Police said they found a 43-year-old man inside the store with a deep cut and blood streaming down the back of his head.
As CBS2’s Jessica Layton reported, police said the two strangers argued as they stood in line and punches were thrown before the machete was thrown.
“It was an altercation between two people and then they, a guy pulled out, it was like a sword and he cut it. People see him lying on the ground and a guy was bleeding from his head. It was terrible, ”said witness Thomas Underwood. “It was just a stampede of people running. A girl was trampled on. She ended up going to the hospital. She hurt herself, she hurt her leg.
The suspect left the store before the police arrived, police said. He hasn’t been caught yet.
The victim was transported to Newark University Hospital. He was released after closing the wound with staples.

Investigators said they did not believe the suspect and the victim knew each other.
The buyers were released inside the store around 2:30 p.m.
“It was just total chaos. I was scared for my life, ”said one buyer.
She described the terrifying times she was stepped on and injured as she walked out of Walmart.

“I was knocked to the ground instantly. Right now, I don’t know what’s going on. I just saw dozens of people running for the exit. Someone shouted he had a gun, ”she told DeAngelis.
“I just started to see people screaming and running, and I’m like, ‘What’s going on?'” Said Ray Martin, who saw the suspect brandish the gun.
Martin believes the victim stepped in to arrest the suspect, but police dispute his account. They say the men threw punches before the machete came out.
“It was crazy. Everyone just grabbed their kids and everyone ran,” said a Walmart employee.
Chopper 2 video showed the firing line and police vehicles outside the store.
Buyers remained concerned.
“How did he even bring the machete?” Something so big, so visible. Even bringing that is beyond me, ”said another buyer. “It’s a scary world and you just have to watch what we are doing and be aware of our surroundings. “
Police said the suspect brought the machete into the store. He seemed to be hidden under his clothes.
“This is the first time we’ve seen something crazy like this and I’m not sure if I’ll be going back to this Walmart again,” said another woman.
CBS2 has reached out to Walmart for comment, but has yet to hear back.
