Shoppers in a supermarket outfitted with singing ducks and avocados can be forgiven if they think they’ve taken a mind-altering drug – but there’s a reason behind it all.
The Stew Leonard store at Paramus Park Mall in New Jersey features an array of never-before-seen attractions that give it a theme park feel.
Along with animatronic mooing cows and singing avocados, there’s Stewie the Water Safety Duck.
The animatronic’s water safety song is set to the music of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”.
Stew Leonard Jr. and his wife, Kim Leonard, established the Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation in memory of their son, who was 21 months old when he lost his life in a drowning accident in 1989.
Above the product section is the green trio of the Avocado Girls.
“We are lawyers, we are lawyers,” they sing to the tune of La Cucaracha.
They shake maracas, play guitars and blink their eyelids.
The jingle goes:
“We are lawyers, we are lawyers / the lawyer is good for you.
“It’s fresh and delicious, it will fill your belly and put you in a good mood.
“We are lawyers, we are lawyers / we liked to sing for you.
“We hope you stop by the next time you shop/at Stew Leonard’s Farm Fresh Foods.”
The meat section includes not only the mooing cow model, but also one hanging upside down from the ceiling.
An employee walks around in a cow costume.
In the register, a parade of cows hangs from the ceiling.
Small fans are positioned on either side of them like propellers,
According to the company’s history, the first version of the company, Norwalk’s Clover Dairy Farms, had milk trucks equipped with plastic cows that lowed for children.
Stew Leonard’s Farm Fresh Five are animatronic drink cartons who wear belted jeans and play instruments. Low Fat, Choco, Rich, Skim and the non-dairy outlier, OJ.
The quintet sings and plays the melody of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” above the refrigerated dairy section.
Another weird feature is the animatronics of a man playing an accordion in a Boar’s Head hot air balloon.
An Incredible Hulk on an automated trapeze is also dotted around the store, a parrot above the breadcrumbs
Above the freezer section awaits a rooster.
When someone presses the button, it pops out and screeches.
Then, just as you exit, there’s a chicken perched above a wishing well.
If a coin hits the target, the animatronic moves and the chicken appears to have an evil eye.
It makes walking around the aisles of a Walmart or Costco positively boring.
