Driver killed after Jeep slams into row of stores in Union, NJ

UNION, New Jersey (WABC) – A motorist has died following a single-vehicle crash in New Jersey early Wednesday.

It happened at 3:12 a.m. in the 1500 block of Morris Avenue in Union.

Police say a 2015 Jeep Wrangler jumped the sidewalk and crashed into several signs, posts and light fixtures in front of a row of stores.

NewsCopter 7 video overhead showed extensive damage to the vehicle and debris strewn across a long section of sidewalk.

The driver, identified as Theodore Hagg, 72, of Elizabeth, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say no one else was in the Jeep at the time of the crash and there were no other injuries.

There was no immediate word what led to the accident.

Morris Avenue/Route 82 was closed in both directions for approximately five hours just east of the Garden State Parkway and Route 22 as police investigated.
